Frequently asked questions
What do you mean by "global internet censorship?"
In many parts of the world, repressive governments prevent their citizens from accessing information on the internet. In places like Russia, China, and Iran, people are unable to access unbiased news, communicate with their loved ones, or share content revealing state-sponsored human rights abuses.
How does Unbounded unblock the internet?
Unbounded is a crowdsourced computing project which uses the power of volunteers like you. Flip the switch above and leave this page open in a background tab. (Or, better yet – install the extension). By doing so, you’ll join millions of other volunteers in a network of “digital bridges” to the open internet. Unbounded leverages the fundamental properties of IP addressing – and the global network of digital activists visiting this page – to confuse the blocking devices employed by authoritarian governments.
Is this safe?
Yes! Unbounded does not expose access to your computer, browser, or home network. It’s safe, it’s private, and it’s a simple thing you can do to make a big difference in the fight for digital liberty and human rights around the world. (Read more in our privacy policy).
Additionally, Unbounded is fully open source and is licensed under the GPL-3.0 license. This means our code is publicly available for anyone to review and contribute to.
Who made this?
Unbounded is created by Brave New Software Project, Inc., the nonprofit organization behind the censorship circumvention tool Lantern, dedicated to ensuring fast, reliable, and secure access to the open internet for everyone.
